AMD Athlon64 3700+
The Fastest Lastest 64-bit S.754 CPU

Recently, there was surprising news about curtaining the AMD CPU 64 bits (or Athlon64) in Socket 754 although this 64 bits started from Socket 754. But not a long time later, the Athlon64 has been opened with Socket 939 which has the memory controller with highly effective dual-channel and more effective than Socket 754. And CPU Athlon64 in Socket754 will become less popular each day because the price is not so different from the CPU Socket 939. So people who use Socket 754 are mostly ones that use the first model of Athlon64. However, AMD still releases some cool models of CPU Socket 754 and the coolest model of Socket 754 at the moment is Athlon64 3700+ that I am going to test today. Let's say it's the test for curtaining the CPU 64 bits of this Socket. Anyway, before you guys will get more confused with so many varieties of the model of Athlon64 Socket 754 and Socket 939, let's take a look at the table below.

We can see that Socket 754 has got many models of Athlon64 (actually there are more than that, but I selected just some confusing models). The fastest model at the moment is Athlon64 3700+ which might be the model of the past from now on because there is going to be no more of Socket 754. Socket 754 will still be alive but just be CPU 32 bits in the name of AMD Sempron. AMD used to release CPU AMD Sempron in Socket 754 once which is the 3100+ model. And not long time ago, AMD has announced 3 models of Sempron Socket 754 as follows; 3000+, 2800+, and 2600+. We have some technical information below.

In 2005, we still have some more of CPU AMD Sempron in Socket 754. So we may notice that AMD has obviously separated the market between Socket 939 and Socket 754. Just like Duron and Athlon in previous days. So I am not going to talk about Socket A (Socket 462) now. We are going to see cheaper CPU Socket 754 which should be an interesting market to grow. But right now, let's see the last Athlon in Socket 754, 3700+ model.

AMD Athlon64 3700+

We will be used to the name of AMD Sempron instead of Socket 754, from now on.

CPU-Z

The AMD Athlon64 3700+ in Socket 754 still uses ClawHammer processor, productive technology is 0.13 micron, core speed is 2.4 GHz with L2 Cache more than 1MB. However, since it's just Socket 754 in memory controller part, so it is just single-channel.

CPU Benchmark
When testing the efficiency of CPU Athlon64 3700+, I still used the popular Benchmark program which we all know well. The result is not different from other Athlon64 at 2.4GHz speed at all, whether it is Athlon64 3800+, 4000+ or even Athlon64 FX-53 in Socket 939.

Memory Bandwidth Benchmark
In the section of Memory Bandwidth, since CPU Socket 754 has the memory controller in single-channel type, so it is resulting in much disadvantage compare to Socket 939. But compare to the same CPU Socket 754 with 3.1 GB/s Bandwidth, it is pretty good.

Cache & Memory Benchmark
The Cache testing of this CPU, it has higher advantage more than other CPU because in Athlon64 3700+ provides the 2 nd Level (L2 Cache) up to 1MB while many other CPU still provides only 512kB.

Conclusion

After I have tested the CPU AMD Athlon64 3700+ for a short period of time, my first impression is that it is a really powerful Socket 754. It is not only the fastest CPU in the Socket, but it's also the last CPU Athlon64 of the Socket too. On the other hand, according to its high speed, it might not be the Overclocker's favorite because when I tried to Overclock it, its speed could not increase long and high heat also occur. (However, the Overclocker does not choose the high Speed CPU for overclocking anyway). Athlon64 3700+ has not yet been on Thailand 's market. One reason is that AMD gave up the production of Athlon64 in Socket 754, another reason might be because of the cost. In the future, we will see more of Sempron in this Socket. Then sometime later, I will tell you about the test of future cheap-graded Socket 754 again. For anybody who is interested in buying Athlon64, I would suggest you to buy Socket 939. Because it is not only easy to find, has more bright future, it's also supported by more Chipset. Anyhow, check the market before deciding to buy. See you soon.
